What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a common vein condition that occurs when proper blood flow in the legs is interrupted. Normally, vein valves ensure that blood always flows toward your heart, but when these valves malfunction or vein walls become too elastic, blood can start to flow backward, causing pooling and pressure buildup. This pooling often results in large, twisted, and painful veins. In addition to enlarged veins, common symptoms of varicose veins include aching, itching, swelling, bruising, and a feeling of heaviness in the legs.

Many factors can contribute to the development of varicose veins, including age, ethnicity, genetics, and lifestyle. Most research suggests that those at the highest risk for varicose veins are older, Caucasian adults who live a sedentary lifestyle or have a family history of varicose veins

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are a mild form of varicose veins and are also caused by pooling blood. Spider veins are small, bluish-purple veins that are less than a millimeter in diameter and arranged in a spiderweb pattern.

Unlike varicose veins, spider veins don’t typically have many symptoms—they’re usually a purely cosmetic issue, although they can become painful in rare cases. If left untreated, spider veins can start to exhibit more severe vein symptoms, like aching, swelling, and mild discomfort. Eventually, they may develop into varicose veins.

Hand Rejuvenation at The Vein Center

Because we use our hands extensively every day, they tend to age faster than the rest of our body. Loss of tissue, uneven pigmentation, poor elasticity, and bulging veins are all normal parts of aging—but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for them.

Hand rejuvenation refers to a collection of procedures and vein treatments used to treat signs of aging and damage in our hands. At The Vein Center, our vein specialists use a combination of sclerotherapy, BBL laser treatments, and cosmetic injectables—depending on the symptoms being treated—to effectively reduce signs of aging and rejuvenate the hands.
